Dr Winterburn's volunteer work rewarded by the University.

Our congratulations go to Dr James Winterburn after he was awarded 3rd prize at the University’s Social Responsibility and Volunteer of the Year Awards!

At the award ceremony

James has volunteered at Saturday Science Club, a monthly free-to-attend group for 11-18 year olds at Catalyst Science Discovery Centre, Runcorn, since 2007. James works with the 14-18 year olds, helping to organise and run the club at the same time as obtaining continued funding for the programme of hands-on and interactive science sessions. He has been chairperson of SSC since it became an independent club in 2011.

SSC is attended by young people from the Widnes and Runcorn areas. These include those in mainstream education and some home-schooled students. Several attendees have a range of autistic spectrum disorders, and those at SSC are proud to give all of their attendees a chance to engage with some exciting and challenging science.
