Project Aim

The purpose of this PhD is to develop a cost effective multi-parameter physiological sensor that enables researchers to measure changes in to an older person’s activity patterns. The ability to measure physiological parameters over time has the potential to provide further information on the ageing process, which enables these to be addressed at various levels within Biosciences.

The PhD project will develop a functional prototype sensor based on optoelectronic and optical fibre sensor instrumentation, capable of defining physiological activity patterns and will provide opportunities to acquire skills in developing technology making this project an ideal platform to progress onto a post-doctoral research career path. It is suitable for a graduate in Engineering or Physical Science with interests in application of technology to bioscience.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have obtained, or be about to obtain, a first or upper second class UK honours degree, or equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK, in an appropriate area of science or technology.

The studentship provides funding for fees and stipend at the Research Council UK rate and are available to eligible UK and EU nationals (due to funding criteria, EU nationals MUST have resided in the UK for three years prior to commencing the studentship). EU applicants that have not resided in the UK for three years prior to commencing the studentship, are eligible for a ‘fees only’ studentship.
