EPSRC PhD Studentship :
Modelling of Electrochemical Catalytic Reactions

Start date

September 2009

Deadline for applications

30 July 2009

Supervisor

Dr Kostas Theodoropoulos

Project reference number

PHD/09/KT/01

Project description

One PhD studentship is currently available in the School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science for research on an EPSRC-funded project on the modelling of microstructured catalytic surfaces to understand the underlying physical and electrochemical phenomena, including interactions between the catalyst and the support.

The aim of this work is to construct models of the catalytic processes on micro- and nano-structured electrodes. The project brings together an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers from 2 Universities (The University of Manchester and University of Newcastle) to address this work, which is anticipated to influence the way we view heterogeneous catalysis in the future. The successful applicant will work in close collaboration with the experimental teams participating in this work and also with a Postdoctoral Associate.

Qualifications

Candidates should have an MSc (or an honours BSc) in Chemical Engineering or a related field such as Physics, Applied Mathematics, Physical Chemistry etc. and should have computational modelling experience and good knowledge of a programming language (FORTRAN and/or C/C++).

Successful candidates will be enrolled in the School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science 3-year PhD program.

Funding

This studentship offers 3 year standard EPSRC funding including UK/EU tuition fees and a £12,000-13,200 tax-free stipend per year. Due to funding body eligibility criteria funding is available for UK/EU students only. Non EU international students are welcome to apply but would have to fund the difference between the UK/EU and international tuition fee.
