Choosing your research topic
As a research student you will work under the supervision of one of our members of academic staff. The information on our research and on the current research topics of each research group can help you to identify research projects or areas of interest and suitable potential supervisors.
In your application form, you should note your research interests, either in a general area of research or in a particular research project, and nominate one or more staff members who you would prefer to be your supervisors. Each member of academic staff has very specialised research interests. You can read more about the academics and their research in the Staff profiles section.
You may wish for more guidance on choosing suitable supervisors, or may wish to discuss your own research interests, or may like a particular academic to suggest a suitable project for you in their area. In this case, you are very welcome to contact members of staff by email, telephone or, if you are in the area, make an appointment to call in and have a chat, before making a decision and sending in your application.
Applying for a research studentship
If you are applying for a funded PhD studentship, then your project and supervisor will normally already be specified. You should indicate your interest in this project on your application form.
For other information and advice about obtaining funding for postgraduate research, see the Funding section.
