Research on measurement science and novel instrumentation systems is carried out in the Centre for Instrumentation and Analytical Science (CIAS). The research is concerned with the measurement of phenomena ranging from nano-scale molecular processes in biological cells right through to macro-scale chemical processes.

These measurements are of great importances to such areas as environmental monitoring, chemical reaction engineering, disease diagnosis, detection of drugs and explosives and imaging for health-care and the life-sciences.

To meet these measurement demands, the research develops new analytical methodologies and instrumentation exploiting a wide range of advanced chemical, biochemical and physical sensors that utilise optical spectroscopies, complex mass spectrometries such as secondary ion mass spectrometry, laser generated ultra-sound, laser trapping, polymer microfabrication, microfluidics and optical fibre sensing.
