Sustainable Industrial Systems
Our mission
To support more sustainable industries and society through technology-oriented research, teaching and training.
This research addresses challenges that arise for industry from the drive towards sustainable development. Experimental and theoretical approaches are used to study complex interactions within industrial systems and between industrial, environmental and social systems, with the aim of making industrial systems more sustainable along whole supply chains. The research covers systems analysis, process design and integration, innovative manufacturing, clean and clean-up technologies, sustainable resource management (water, waste, renewable feedstocks), energy, and environmental pollution, monitoring and modelling.
The research in process integration pursues a blend of industrially focussed and fundamental research into chemical process design principles. Interactions between elements of a chemical process systems are exploited during process design via their material and energy flows, resulting in integrated processes, exploiting synergies between the system components, that have superior performances, with respect to raw materials consumption, energy demand, process economics, environmental impact and sustainability. Research in the area of process design and integration is carried out within the internationally-acclaimed Centre for Process Integration (CPI).
