Joining our research student community

The School has a vibrant and proactive postgraduate community of more than 120 research students. Many social events are organised throughout the year to enable students to meet and become better acquainted.

Postgraduate Mentor scheme

The School runs a mentor scheme for postgraduate students. Here, current research students help new postgraduate students settle into the School and into life in the city of Manchester. Postgraduate Mentors are specially trained research students whose friendly assistance is available to you from the time we offer you a project, even before you come here, until you graduate.

Research student forum

The needs and opinions of our students are respected and acknowledged. They are used to help develop the School for the benefit of current and future students. The Research Student Forum is an open group who meet regularly to discuss issues of concern or potential improvements to their student life. The Forum also organises social events throughout the year.

Your research group

You will find yourself working with a close-knit group in your specialist research area. The group may consist of other students, academics, post-doctoral staff and specialised technicians. You will gain a sense of belonging and much support from your group. The School also encourages multi-disciplinary working and you may find yourself involved in cross-group activities, for example when delivering seminars.

Student Representation

Our PGR students are represented by elected year 'Student Representatives' who sit on school and faculty level committees to advise on policy, help to resolve any specific issues and suggest new initiatives. Our student reps also organise a number of social events throughout the year for all PGR students in the school.

The University International Development Team

The University International Development Team offers advice and guidance to international students, their parents and sponsors on a wide range of matters affecting students from overseas. Please see the University's International Students page for more information.
