Morton Laboratory
The pilot-plant scale Morton Laboratory is the only one of its type and size in a UK university. The laboratory houses the same sort of equipment that is used in a real chemical manufacturing plant and it is used by undergraduate students to work with large-scale equipment. This is very different to working in a normal sized laboratory and will help you to understand the practical problems of controlling processes on an industrial scale. Undergraduate students gain invaluable experience by carrying out industry-scale laboratory experiments - an experience unique to Manchester.
Benefits of this facility to students include:
- in-house industrial experience as part of the course
- an enhanced understanding of theory
- practical experience of safety issues
- practical insight into start-up and shutdown principles
- experience of writing technical reports
- understanding practical process control issues on an industrial scale
There are also several smaller-scale laboratories where you learn how to plan and undertake experiments, evaluate and operate laboratory equipment, appreciate the safety requirements, and analyse experimental data using graphical and statistical methods.
"I am from Seattle , USA . I decided to study chemical engineering as I liked chemistry at school but it was too small a subject - I wanted to apply it to a wider context. I was looking for a place that didn't just teach theory - I liked the look of the pilot-scale laboratory and wanted to get in there. Also, the lecturers on the course are people at the forefront of research."
You will have access to computer clusters across the campus and in halls of residence as well as over 100 computers in the School dedicated to chemical engineering students. These give you access to specialised technical software applications as well as extremely fast connection to the Internet, your own email account and space to save data.
As a student at The University of Manchester will be using the John Rylands University Library, one of the largest academic libraries in Britain , with over 3.5 million books and journals. This includes general and specialist materials as well as a variety of electronic resources.
